A Post For All Tips And Tricks Regular Readers

If this is your first time here, I invite you to browse the blog archives, as what I’m going to write now is not of general interest.

For my regular readers: if any of you sent me emails over the past four days, please be aware that I haven’t received them. The reason is that I’ve been invited by the hosting company I have been using over the past 18 months to move my business elsewhere, as I’m not wanted by them anymore.

The announcement was made as a response to my inquiry that all my sites were down. After I sent as ticket, the client service answered me that my account has been suspended.

A prior notice would have been welcome, but since this step was skipped, I’ve seen myself in the situation of not getting my emails and of explaining to my advertisers why their ads are not displayed anymore.

I also had a hot weekend, having to backup and move my stuff. Following a request I’ve done, I was granted ftp access. Moving the sites was time consuming, and not all things functioned on the new server immediately after I’ve installed them. Plus I had to wait for the DNS to propagate. For this blog, it took more than 24 hours.

As a conclusion, the job would have been easier if I had backups for everything. I usually do have weekly backups, but now, with the vacation and other issues that kept me away from the computer, I simply neglected making them.

And it had to be now the best time for Dreamhost to invite me to leave.

huh, you’ve been through quite an ordeal, Simonne. So who’s your new hosting company? Did you move all your sites already and got them working again?

That’s not the first time I hear bad things about Dreamhost. Someone should start dreamhostsucks.com

Hi Vivien, now I got a reseller account at Hostgator. I still have to move a few Amazon affiliate stores and some web directories, but the biggest part of the job has already been done.

I’m not going to start dreamhostsucks, although it’s a great idea :)

Wow, that sounds horrible! Did they at least bother to give you a reason for their silly request?

Anyway, glad you’ve managed to get everything moved to the new server! I am sure the drawbacks are only temporary and you’ll have everything up and running in no time :)

Yes, Alina, they told me that I run an SEO link farm, and that’s against their rules. I’m not doing what they said, but I was going to move away from them in November anyway, so I would have done all these by then.

Everything is up and running now, as I type this comment :)
