Researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen have succeeded in transferring a quantum state of light to a material object – an ensemble of atoms. It seems that Star Trek inspired once more the scientists, by igniting the spark of lateral thinking and creativity.
Did you know that teleportation was not part of the original script of Star Trek?
It happened that the supplier who was supposed to manufacture the aircraft meant to transport the crew from Enterprise to other locations, was very late with the delivery. So, about 6 or 7 episodes were not covered. As the heroes were not supposed to spend their whole day on the space ship, the team had to think of a mean of transportation. One of them said: “why don’t we just make them appear out of the blue?”. And this is how teleportation was adopted as the best transportation vehicle.
