The clear problem with that as i saw is the same as you mentioned. I believe I dont want to have the word 'blog' in my url UNLESS m blog is about blogs. However I would say that redirects are not as difficult as you think. You can and you SHOULD chaneg your urls just the way you like and configure your htaccess accordingly. It will probably require three or four lines to achive a permanent redirect for whatever number of urls you have. If you have difficulty in doing that .. let me know. Also make sure that <a href='http://contents-magic.com/43/advice/keep-a-test-site-of-your-wordpress-blog/'>you do all stuff on your test blog first</a>.
